Emma slammed down the phone a glared at it and a few moments later picked it up and listened to the dial tone. She looked down at Priscilla who sat looking  up at Emma.

“What am I going to do?” Emma asked her.

Priscilla walked to her basket, grabbed her leash in her mouth and walked over, wagging hopefully.

Iain hadn’t called since he dropped her off the night before. The silence in the car had not been what Emma had expected from this weekend away. She had had images of Iain carrying her up the stairs in a dramatic gesture of love. She had thought that this vacation would change their ‘relationship’ into a relationship.

Emma sighed, picked up the proffered leash and said, “At least you know what you want.

She grabbed her keys and opened to door take Priscilla for a walk. Her neighbor, Adam, stood there, prepared to knock. “Hi!” he said, “I was just checking to make sure you’re back, wouldn’t want Priscilla to go without her walk.” Priscilla was already excitedly bouncing on her two back feet around Adam’s legs, excited and pleased. Adam knelt down saying, “Who’s a good little lady, who’s a sweetheart?” in a strangely high-pitched voice.

Emma was taken aback but also tickled. She’d actually asked Adam to watch Priscilla partly out of spite for his many complaints about Priscilla’s barking. But now, as the little dog danced around his feet barking in high-pitched excited bark, Emma’s opinion softened and gentled. “She seems to like you.”

He grinned at her and then took Priscilla in his arms and Emma watched in amazement as the little dog licked his chin. “Yeah, I think she does,” he replied. “Oh,” he said, ” just wait.” Adam, still carrying Priscilla, walked to his apartment door and opening it, grabbed something inside.

“I bought her this,” he said as he held out a tiny Priscilla-sized sweater. “It was cold.”

Emma didn’t really know what to say. “Um. Thanks? I’m just about to go for a walk with her, do you want to come?” she asked.

“I’d love to,” replied Adam grinning, “let me get my coat.”

Great story … although I personally would have reservations about any man who bought a sweater for a dog.

Awww. LOL Can’t believe he bought the dog a sweater, but I think it’s adorable. I could totally imagine him getting suckered in by Priscilla. 🙂
